Murzilli Consulting’s Managing Partner and Director of Stakeholder Engagement, Eszter Kovács was featured in the May issue of the magazine, DRONES, on the topic of “The Gender Gap, Why the Drone Economy Should Increase the Proportion of Women in the Industry”.

Eszter Kovács is a drone industry leader who holds a military and safety engineering degree. She is the CEO of DroneTalks, the online platform created to spread ideas and educate professionals in the drone industry ecosystem, the co-founder of Aerial Cities, the executive-level event created for the drone community and the Managing Partner of M&K Global. She is also a certified agile coach, a PRINCE2 practitioner project manager, a certified drone pilot and an advisor for multiple global events and initiatives.

The article outlines some of the drone industry’s commonly discussed obstacles, such as regulatory hurdles and public acceptance, to further developing the drone economy. Its main highlight, however, is the shortage of skilled workers to fill the industry’s growing need as it continues to expand. With this issue in mind, the article proposes that the UAS ecosystem should increase its efforts to attract more women to roles within the industry rather than competing for the existing talent pools.

According to a study presented by the Verban Unbemannte Luftfahrt (Assciation of Unmanned Aviation (VUL) in 2023, there were 15,000 people in Germany alone who were focused on drone careers. This number could be significantly increased by empowering more women to join the global industry.

The shortage of skilled workers within the drone market directly impacts the industry’s ability to innovate, expand and meet the growing demands of the industry stakeholders. The article refers to a statistic pulled from the U.S Civil Airmen Statistics and published by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), where they recorded 30,935 registered drone pilots within the USA. This figure was assessed by US Journalist Sally French who recorded that this only makes up 7.9% of worldwide registrations.

These statistics show the speed at which the market, mostly known as a male-dominated industry is growing. As a female leader within the drone industry, Eszter is a strong believer in early-stage drone education for women, which was mirrored by Vaughn College of Aeronautics lecturer, Elena Sophia Garcia who has brought the topic to high schools.

“It is our responsibility to create an inclusive environment, overcome stereotypes and ensure that the drone industry reflects true diversity. We now have the chance to create an environment that is balanced and welcoming to everyone." - Eszter Kovács on the importance of increasing the numbers of women in the drone industry.
