Murzilli Consulting’s Managing Partner and Director of Stakeholder Engagement, Eszter Kovács was featured on CANSO’s Airspace World 2024 panel, AI and Autonomy in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).

Eszter Kovács is a drone industry leader who holds a military and safety engineering degree. She is the CEO of DroneTalks, the online platform created to spread ideas and educate professionals in the drone industry ecosystem, the co-founder of Aerial Cities, the executive-level event created for the drone community and Managing Partner of M&K Global. She is also a certified agile coach, a PRINCE2 practitioner project manager, a certified drone pilot and an advisor for multiple global events and initiatives.

In an exclusive interview, Eszter shared her knowledgeable insight from the discussion. Her key takeaways outlined the importance of not only AI solutions but also the humans responsible for the decisions behind AI. She noted that AI serves as an enabler in the AAM industry, which allows humans on the control panels to make more educated decisions based on the broader view that AI solutions provide. This allows human operators to use automated AAM systems to optimise their operations and increase their safety processes.

Eszter detailed that while there are no completely automated processes currently in operation, there are several parts and processes that have been automated using AI. She celebrated these accomplishments but stated that it is time to move on from the testing phase of these elements and to enable airspace corridors for practical, real-world experiences. She believes this will be one of the crucial turning points for refining and beginning the full implementation of these methods into AAM solutions.

Another key factor for AI and autonomy within the AAM industry Eszter discussed was the need to harmonise the ground and air infrastructure. She explained that building vertiports and ensuring that they are digitally connected to the aerial infrastructure is crucial for harmonisation. She mentioned several good examples of successful aviation practices such as airport management, aviation stakeholder communication and deconfliction for flights and landings. Eszter noted that these examples and others such as timing coordination also need to be recreated for AAM ground infrastructure.

Combining all of these factors, Eszter concluded that creating and harmonising the digital infrastructure is the necessary next steps for successful,  efficient and safe implementation of autonomous solutions into the advanced air mobility ecosystem.

“Digital infrastructure needs to be created and harmonised, and we are in the right place and the right time to do it,” - Eszter Kovács on the importance of AI and Autonomy in Advanced Air Mobility.
