Javier Diana López, Murzilli Consulting’s Senior Consultant for Aviation Systems, was featured in the article “Innovative Air Mobility - The Challenge of Standardisation for Future Aviation", published by infodron.es, to share his insights on the ongoing efforts to address standardisation challenges in the rapidly evolving field of innovative air mobility, and he has further expanded on the topic since the article release one year ago.

Javier is an Aerospace Engineer with a master's degree in Air Traffic Management. Prior to his role at Murzilli Consulting, he worked for EUROCAE as their Technical Programme Manager, where he oversaw WG-105 on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), WG-112 on Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) and WG-63 on Complex Aircraft Systems. He also developed experience contributing to the aviation ecosystem at ICAO level, supporting the ICAO AAM Study Group and ICAO RPAS Panel.

Javier holds expert knowledge of the rapid advancements in drone technology and the emergence of innovative operational concepts, such as air taxis designed to transport passengers and cargo efficiently. Now in 2025, he emphasises that while technological progress has been fast, the acceptance and integration of these innovations into the current regulatory and operational aviation framework present significant challenges.

Javier also highlights the pivotal role of standardisation organisations like EUROCAE in bridging the gap between Research and Development (R&D) and the different international regulatory frameworks. Since 2007, EUROCAE has been at the forefront of establishing performance-based standards for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Today, this work is primarily carried out through Working Groups 105 and 112, which focus respectively on UAS and VTOL systems, and on electric and hybrid propulsion. These groups play a pivotal role in developing the technical frameworks needed to enable the safe certification and integration of novel aircraft types into the aviation environment.

The current activities reflect the growing complexity and maturity of the sector, addressing not only traditional airworthiness and operational requirements, but also emerging challenges such as system modularity, autonomous functionalities, and advanced detect-and-avoid capabilities. Special attention is given to the reliability of critical systems, scalable design solutions, and the assurance of safety in both manned and unmanned contexts. In parallel, considerations such as cybersecurity, human-machine interface design and environmental sustainability are being embedded into the standardisation process to support a robust, future-ready regulatory framework for air mobility.

Javier is also fully conscious of the crucial importance of social acceptance and trust in new mobility concepts. He notes that without public acceptance and confidence, the successful implementation of present and future innovative air mobility solutions remains uncertain. He highlights the necessity for robust, high-quality standards that not only meet technical requirements but also consider societal implications to ensure these technologies enhance and improve daily life.

"The success of innovative air mobility hinges not just on technology, but on public trust. Without broad societal acceptance, even the most advanced solutions will struggle to take off. Building confidence in these new mobility concepts is not just an option — it is a necessity for a sustainable and prosperous future in aviation." - Javier Diana Lopez on the crucial intersection of technology, trust and standardisation.
